Redescription and phylogenetic analysis of the type species of the genus Panagrellus Thorne, 1938 (Rhabditida, Panagrolaimidae), P. pycnus Thorne, 19…
2021
Abstract The identity of Panagrellus pycnus, the type species of the genus Panagrellus, is discussed after studying specimens from a cultured population collected in Italy that fits the original material of the species. A new characterization is consequently provided as follows: body 0.93–1.32 mm long, lip region continuous with the adjoining body, stoma with gymnostom very reduced, pharynx with not swollen metacorpus, neck 161–203 µm long, excretory pore at level of the metacorpus, post-vulval uterine sac 99–162 µm long or 2.6–3.8 times as long as the body diameter divided in a short tubular proximal part and a long swollen distal part, vulva post-equatorial (V = 63–69), female tail conica…
Morphological and molecular characterization of three new parastenocarididae (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from caves in Southern Italy
2020
We describe three new parastenocaridid: Cottarellicaris sanctiangeli Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov., Stammericaris vincentimariae Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov. and Proserpinicars specincola Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov., collected in the pools of five different caves located in Calabria (Southern Italy). We conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on the mitochondrial COI and ribosomal 18S sequences of C. sanctiangeli sp. nov. and S. vincentimariae sp. nov., and of four more species of Stammericaris and one Proserpinicaris available from literature. Based on the molecular study, the specimens of C. sanctiangeli sp. nov. are clearly separated from the species belonging to the closely-rel…

Chromosomal location polymorphism of major rDNA sites in two Mediterranean populations of the killifih Aphanius fasciatus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae)
2005
The chromosomes of the Mediterranean killifish, Aphanius fasciatus from two populations, the Lagoon of Venice (LV, 15 specimens) and the Lagoon ‘Stagnone di Marsala’ (Sicily) (SM, 48 specimens), have been investigated using conventional Ag-staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 18S rDNA probe. The two methods revealed variation in the number of major rDNA sites ranging from 8 to 14 (LV) and from 1 to 4 (SM) per individual. The fact that each individual possessed its own number of sites implies that observed variation was structural. Moreover, overlapping of silver staining and FISH patterns demonstrated that all ribosomal genes were transcriptionally active in each speci…
"KARYOTYPE, BANDING AND rDNA FISH IN THE SCARAB BEETLE ANOPLOTRUPES STERCOROSUS (COLEOPTERA SCARABAEOIDEA: GEOTRUPIDAE). DESCRIPTION AND COMPARATIVE …
2004
Six specimens of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Coleoptera Scarabaeoidea: Geotrupidae) were analysed using conventional staining, banding techniques and fluorescent in situ hybridization with a ribosomal probe (rDNA FISH). Detailed karyotype description was also joined to a comparative analysis between present data and those previously reported for Thorectes intermedius [Chromosome Res. 7 (1999) 1]. The two species, both belonging to the tribe Geotrupini, show the same modal number but different autosomal morphology which is in contrast with the high chromosome stability argued for Geotrupinae during the last three decades. Moreover, a detailed comparison reveals the occurrence of a plesiomorphi…
